Soar Mill Cove is located between the famously popular estuary town of Salcombe and the charming fishing village of Hope Cove. The holiday park, where Driftwood Lodge resides, is located amidst spectacular coastal scenery owned by the National Trust and is a 15 minute walk from Soar Mill Cove itself.
Soar Mill Cove is a small, sandy, dog friendly beach which is surrounded by steep cliffs with numerous rock pools to explore, rocks to climb and beautiful clear water to swim in. There are breathtaking walks along the South West Coastal Path which takes you along some of the most unspoilt coastline in the country.
Nearby, is the town of Malborough with dog friendly pubs, a well stocked co-op and a post office. The local town of Kingsbridge also offers more amenities and a good selection of restaurants. Restaurant Twenty Seven by Jamie Rogers is worth a visit if celebrating a special occasion.

Salcombe, an iconic seaside town and one of the country’s best loved holiday destinations, is a 10 minute drive away (or 4.5 miles by foot following the coastal path) and boasts a selection of independent boutiques, gift shops, upmarket nautical clothes shops such as Musto, Quba and Jack Wills, art galleries as well as restaurants and pubs. Salcombe is famous for its crab and even has its own crab festival. Do try the amazing whole crab, served with chips and mayo in one of the local restaurants. The Salcombe dairy ice cream shop is another must and if that isn’t enough of a sugar fix, then pop right next door to Cranch’s Sweet Shop for a retro experience. And then of course there is the exquisite Salcombe Gin – you could even book a gin making experience in the distillery.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, takes you to one of our favourite family and dog friendly beaches – North Sands. The shallow waters here make it perfect for families with young children who want to go paddling or swimming and even our four-legged companions can join in the fun all year round. Just opposite is the Winking Prawn, a shabby chic beach restaurant. They also serve some great ice-cream from their fashionably nostalgic ice-cream van that is parked just outside.
Half a mile south of North Sands is South Sands beach which is home to Sea Kayak Salcombe where you can hire kayaks, paddle boards and more. Bo’s Beach cafe will keep you refreshed for a long day here. Dogs are allowed during off peak season only. They are not allowed during high season, from May to September.
Other great beaches include East Portlemouth and Mill Bay, both dog-friendly, and which are best accessed by the all-year-round passenger ferry from Salcombe.
Our all time favourite is Hope Cove, which you could reach by foot in 1.5 hours following the South West Coastal Path or in 10 minutes by car from Driftwood Lodge. Not only are there two sandy bays you can take your pick of, with Mouthwells Sands being dog friendly out of high season and Harbour beach being dog friendly all-year-round (with dogs on lead), there are also great places to eat and drink in this quaint little village with good facilities. Fancy something a little different, then why not dine at the Lobster Pod Bistro and enjoy one of the cosy glass pods for a private dining experience with a spectacular panoramic view.
